Every employee, including contract workers, supervisors, and managers, should be educated and trained in workplace violence prevention. The training should take place annually, including during new employee orientation. Depending on the facility (eg, if located in a high-risk area), training and education may me done more frequently. The training programs must be run by qualified trainers and should include role-playing, simulators, and drills for an effective outcome. A successful training program should be evaluated for efficiency on a regular basis.
Managers and supervisors must have additional training so they can learn to recognize high-risk situations. Such training will help them make changes to the policies and procedures and even changes to the facility itself in order to reduce or eliminate hazards.
