Before the collection process is to begin, the phlebotomist should review the test requisition. This form will indicate the patient's demographics, the type of tubes to be collected, any diet restrictions, and any other important information regarding the patient or the procedure.
Based on the information from the test requisition, the phlebotomist should prepare the necessary equipment for collection. These should include correct microcollection tubes, gauze pads, bandage, lancet, alcohol or other antiseptic pad, gloves, heel warmer, sharps container, and permanent ink pen.
Since many patients are allergic to latex, it is important the gloves and any other equipment used in the collection procedure are latex free.
