The macrophages in this image have multiple large phagocytic vacuoles. This sample is a reactive pleural effusion in a patient with widely metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma.
These particular macrophages have been removing some of the red blood cells (RBCs) that have been released into the pleural space due to the spread of this patient's tumor. The bottom image is a phagocytic macrophage with ingested RBCs (erythrophage).
