Tissue calcifications are part of every histology laboratory, routine or specialty, and are inherently problematic. Although little time is spent training techs about proper decalcification protocols, great results can be achieved with more training. Today, many decalcification solutions are easy to use and rapid, without damaging tissue. Testing the end-point of decalcification must also be approached as an integral aspect of good tissue processing. Testing and employing the best decalcification protocols for each laboratory can lead to optimal results for techs and pathologists.
