Healthcare personnel who give injections should adhere to safe injection practices, which include:
- Adhering to the basic principles of aseptic technique when preparing and administering parenteral medications
- Using a sterile, single-use, disposable needle and syringe for each injection administered
- Never using a single-use needle/syringe to administer intravenous medication to multiple patients
- Not reinserting the same needle into a multiple-dose vial of solution container (eg, saline bag)
- Not preparing injectable medications in the same workspace where used needles/syringes are disassembled
