Prevention: Acanthamoeba Species

Because of the ubiquitous nature of the amoeba, the unknown portal of entry, and the long incubation period, no defined method for the prevention of GAE and cutaneous acanthamoebiasis exists. Immunocompromised individuals should, as much as possible, be cautious and avoid environmental conditions where Acanthamoeba species might flourish. Contact lens wearers should be educated regarding the proper care of contact lenses and the contact lens cases. It is important that contact lenses not be worn when swimming, performing water sport activities, or when enjoying a hot tub or Jacuzzi.
