Transfusion Reaction Investigation Goals

With the exception of mild urticarial reactions, all suspected transfusion reactions must be investigated. Each institution must have policies and procedures defining the process involved in the recognition, investigation, and reporting of adverse events related to transfusion.

The general goals of transfusion reaction investigations are:
  • Rule out a possible acute hemolytic reaction.
  • Determine, if possible, the etiology of the reaction.
  • Provide appropriate and timely clinical support for the patient.
  • Determine what blood components are suitable if additional transfusion support is necessary.
  • Communicate findings to the patient’s physician and others as deemed necessary.
Ongoing institutional quality oversight of transfusion reaction investigation and reporting is essential.
