Although much less frequent, TRALI has been associated with cellular components such as Red Blood Cells, which contain smaller amounts of plasma. Proposed mechanisms in cellular products also include a non-immune mechanism, which is associated with transfusion of bioactive substances that have been released by cells during component storage. These substances can react with previously activated neutrophils resulting in endothelial damage and permeability edema.
