White Blood Cell (WBC) Count

Infants with classic pertussis infection often have an elevated WBC count in excess of 20.0 x 109/L with lymphocytosis (> 50% lymphocytes). However, lymphocytosis is not present in all cases of infant pertussis infection and generally is not present in older children and adults, particularly if the case is mild or modified. WBC results by themselves are non-specific and inconclusive.
