Introduction to the Identification of Molds

Molds are generally identified using a combination of methods, including:
  • Microscopic morphologic features
  • Morphologic features of colonies
  • Growth rate
Growth rate and colony morphologic features are variable, which is why these identification methods must be viewed in combination with other methods. Observation of microscopic morphologic features is usually more definitive. However, some organisms have distinguishing colony morphologic features, which are helpful in their identification.
