DMAIC: Define Phase

These items are completed during the Define phase of a Six Sigma project:
  • Project charter
  • List of team members
  • Documentation of current process (flow chart, SIPOC, etc)
As the project begins to take shape during this phase, it is important to remember that DMAIC is about solving problems. Therefore team members must be careful to NOT:
  • Assign blame or responsibility for the problem.
  • Suggest a solution at this point. Remember, if a workable solution is available, then this project does not require the DMAIC process.
  • State personal opinion instead of the actual problem (only problems that can be measured can be solved).
Numerous Six Sigma tools are available for use in the define phase. Choose tools that are appropriate for the scope of the project and the available resources. There is no need to utilize every tool. Some suggested tools are discussed on the following pages.
