Clinical Laboratory Testing in Metabolic Syndrome

The diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome requires laboratory testing of glucose, triglycerides, and HDL-C. Glucose may also be assayed with self-monitoring glucose meters. Several other analytes may be monitored in those diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, including LDL-C, IL-6, adiponectin, and PAI-1.
Hyperinsulinemia occurs in insulin resistance and insulin levels can be quantitated in the clinical laboratory. However, lack of standardization and significant variation in results currently makes routine insulin testing impractical.
