FFP SHOULD NOT be used for volume replacement. Other products, such as normal saline, albumin, and Plasma Protein Fraction (PPF), are available for volume replacement and carry less risk. FFP should not be used to reconstitute red blood cells, used as a source of protein, or used routinely after cardiopulmonary bypass.

Although they may provide some guidance for FFP transfusion decisions, currently available guidelines are not clearly supported by research data and some traditional indications for FFP administration may not be evidence-based. In 2010, the AABB convened a panel of experts to establish evidence-based guidelines for FFP transfusion. The panel concluded that the research data do support the use of FFP for massive transfusion and for warfarin-related intracranial hemorrhage. Data are insufficient to support other indications, and additional research is necessary.
