Cell Types Observed in Urine Sediment

Epithelial cells, white blood cells (WBCs), and red blood cells (RBCs) may be present in urine sediment. Epithelial cells in the urine may originate from any site in the genitourinary tract. It is normal to find a few epithelial cells in the sediment.

WBCs may enter the urinary tract anywhere from the glomerulus to the urethra. The WBCs are primarily neutrophils.
RBCs may originate in any part of the urinary tract. Normal urine may contain a few RBCs per high power field.
