Course Introduction

Antibody screening and identification focuses on the detection and identification of unexpected and clinically significant antibodies. Clinically significant antibodies are those antibodies capable of causing red cell destruction. It's essential to identify clinically significant antibodies through a systematic approach to ensure the selection of compatible blood products for transfusion. This process helps minimize the risk of adverse reactions, including transfusion reactions and hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN).
This course will discuss the techniques utilized by blood bank scientists to detect and identify antibodies routinely identified in the medical laboratory.
