In 1987, between July 6 and September 1, there were 19 cases of encephalitis in West Virginia. Viral encephalitis was the diagnosis in 11 patients, four had only meningitis, and four had meningo-encephalitis. All the patients were children, with ages ranging from one to 14-years-old, and lived in rural areas in the central part of the state. This region was near a large hardwood forest where the Ae. triseriatus is plentiful. More boys than girls were affected (3.8:1). All but one child was hospitalized (18 children) and there was one death due to cerebral edema.
