Personnel and Qualifications: Types of Clinical Laboratory Personnel

Director Qualifications

A physician may direct a clinical laboratory without a director's license if he / she is certified in clinical pathology by a national board and has at least four years of relevant experience.

Non-physicians may obtain a director's license if he / she:

  • Holds a doctor's degree in chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science
  • Is certified in one of the laboratory specialties by a national board
  • Passes an exam in supervision and administration
  • Completes one hour of HIV / AIDS continuing education
  • Completes two hours of medical errors continuing education

A director can oversee up to five laboratories.
