Criteria for Performing a Manual Review of the Smear

Automated cell counters will flag abnormal findings. The following guidelines represent typical review criteria, although specific requirements vary between laboratories. Follow the criteria established by your laboratory's procedure:

  • Total white blood cell count <3.0 X 109/L or >12.0 X 109/L
  • Neutrophils >80%
  • Lymphocytes >45% or <10%
  • Monocytes >15%
  • Eosinophils >10%
  • Basophils >5%
  • A morphology review may also be indicated if the platelet count is <100 X 109/L or >650 X 109/L.
