Detection of Ketone Bodies

The terms "ketones" or "ketone bodies" refer to acetoacetic acid (acetoacetate), acetone, and beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHB). Screening procedures used to detect ketonuria are usually sufficient and do not require secondary or confirmatory testing. The only time when it may be warranted is if urine color masks a result on the reagent strip. In this case, the tablet test may produce a readable result.
