Introduction to Red Cell Morphology

Area of Evaluation

Red blood cell (RBC) morphology should be evaluated on a blood smear in an area where the red cells are close to each other without significant overlap.

This image is representative of an acceptable area for evaluation of RBC morphology. Notice that the majority of the cells can be clearly differentiated with only occasional overlap.
