Signs and symptoms are used only as a general guide to the type of transfusion reaction that may be occurring.

Lower back pain, for example, would suggest an acute hemolytic reaction, whereas fever is associated with several types of reactions:

  • Hemolytic (immediate and delayed)
  • Febrile
  • Bacteriogenic
