Bloodborne Pathogens: Hepatitis B Virus

Who is infected?

  • Patients with Hepatitis B and other bloodborne infections can appear healthy, so you can't tell whose blood is infectious.
  • So treat all:
    • blood,
    • body fluids,
    • secretions (except sweat),
    • excretions,
    • non-intact skin, and
    • mucous membranes
    as if they were infectious.
  • That's what the term Standard Precautions means.
